Flipped is a romance told in two voices. The first time Juli Baker saw Bryce Loski, she flipped. The first time Bryce saw Juli, he ran. That’s pretty much the pattern for these two neighbors until the eighth grade, when, just as Juli is realizing Bryce isn’t as wonderful as she thought, Bryce is starting to see that Juli is pretty amazing. How these two teens manage to see beyond the surface of things and come together makes for a comic and poignant romance.SPOILERS!!!
Flipped is not at all like what you expect from a romance book. To me, this shouldn't even be categorized as a romance novel, because this book is more about knowing people beneath the surface of looks. Juli Baker 'fell in love' (as in love as you can get at the age of seven) with Bryce Loski the first time she laid eyes on his "dazzling blue" eyes. Bryce was often described as a handsome boy by adults, and mostly by Juli. So we can assume that Juli fell for Bryce's looks instead of him (really, how could she even know him? His personality? They've never even had one full conversation for crying out loud!). And on the other hand, Bryce despised Juli (well, 'despised' may have been too strong of a word, but whatever). When Juli got all clingy and in love with Bryce, he was just there trying to shake her off, since he never really tried to get to know her (how can he get to know her when he's already busy avoiding her the whole time?). SO, both of them barely knew each other, and already they have strong feelings for each other (one positive, the other pretty negative).
But then here came some problems they faced that changed them. Completely. Their feelings for each other Flipped, get it? (>_<) Here, Juli found out that Bryce isn't really as perfect as she always thought he was, all she ever thought about and knew about was his surface, which could never define a person completely. And there, Bryce is starting to think that there's something more to the 'scary' Juli Baker. Then, they decide to try to get to know each other.
And... here's where the big part comes...
THE END.
I know! It ends right there!
As much as I want to know more about what happened to both of them, I know that there's no other perfect way to end this book. So, great job Draanen, but could you give us a heads up if there's a sequel? Which I highly doubt. -__-
Okay then, here we go for now! Stay tuned for another book talk I'll be posting soon!
And FYI,
Flipped is already adapted into a movie, if you haven't yet known, so... go check that out! Here's a still of the movie!
